Find out your tax ID – here’s how it works

by Pramith

When your tax ID is requested, you naturally don’t know it by heart. In this practical tip, we will show you how to find out the number.

Find out your tax ID: Find it here

  • Every German citizen has an 11-digit tax identification number. You received the number via a letter from the Federal Central Tax Office (see picture).
  • If you cannot find the letter, look for your income tax certificate or the last income tax assessment notice. The tax ID can also be found here.
  • Alternatively, you can also find the number in a letter from the tax office from 2011. This informed every citizen about the storage of wage tax deduction characteristics.

Tax ID not found: What to do

  • If you can’t find your tax ID anywhere, don’t worry. You can request the number again via the following website of the Federal Central Tax Office.
  • Fill out the form and your tax ID will be sent to your registration address by post. It can take up to 4 weeks before you receive the number.
