Google Fonts are convenient because you can use many fonts for your graphic or web design projects free of charge and at a glance. If these are automatically embedded on a website, they may not always be privacy compliant, problems can arise. To avoid these, you can download and use them separately.
Google Fonts: This is why you should download them
If you use Google Fonts as an automatic integration, this is a problem for data protection reasons.
- If Google collects data via the automatic integration of the fonts is not clear, as Google itself denies this info.
- Since this issue is not entirely clear, you are always on the right side if you download required fonts manually and upload them in the graphics program or on your website.
- In most website builders for WordPress, such as Elementor or Divi, you can switch off Google Fonts, for example, and upload them manually. This way you play it safe and know that you and your website visitors are not being tracked.
How to download Google Fonts: Instructions
Google now provides you with more than 1400 fonts (as of January 2023) for free. Open the Google Fonts website and proceed in the following way to download them separately.
- If you already know which font you need, you can enter it in the search mask and search for it. If you do not yet know which font you need, you can search for categories, languages and special features of the fonts.
- In addition, enter a sentence under “Type something” so that you are directly shown what the respective font looks like.
- Once you have selected a font, click on it. Then click on the “Download family” button at the top right. The font will now be downloaded.
- You can now upload the zip folder with the font to Elementor, for example, and use it.
