At Christmas, Internet interference increases in many households. Read here why the Christmas tree interferes with your WLAN and how you can solve the problem.
WLAN and Christmas tree – why this can cause problems
The reasons for the interference you install yourself, so to speak – the Christmas decorations.
- The festive lights of the Christmas tree, but also other copper cables, are a reason for interference. The cables from the fairy lights reduce the signal from your router.
- Light chains act like antennas and thus interfere with radio waves.
- The first measure is to choose the right location for your Christmas tree.
-
Ideally, the Christmas tree should be as far away from the router as possible. If this is not possible, position the router behind a larger piece of furniture such as a large armchair or, even better, very high up, for example on top of a cupboard.
- When it’s time to decorate your Christmas tree, make sure you keep a close eye on your router’s signal.
- In a small flat, you’ll probably be faced with a choice: Either do without a stable WLAN during the Christmas season – or just do without lots of fairy lights on the tree.
- A string of lights alone sets the mood. You could also use the warmth and light of candles – they won’t interfere with your Wi-Fi signal. Besides, the electricity for fairy lights costs money.
