Android: How to clear browser cookies

by Flo

Clearing your browser cookies on your Android phone not only removes your tracks, but can also fix problems with websites. Clearing cookies is easy and only takes a few seconds.

Android: How to clear cookies from the Chrome browser

You can install many different browsers on your Android phone. However, most users use the preinstalled Google Chrome browser.

  • Open Google Chrome and tap the menu button with the three dots in the top right corner.

  • Select the category “History” and tap on the option “Delete browsing data” at the top.

  • Switch to the “Advanced” section at the top. Here you can select all the data you want, including “Cookies and website data”.

  • Additionally, you can select at the top of “Time period” if you only want to remove the cookies from a specific time period.

  • The “Delete data” button then removes the cookies from your Android device.

  • Note: The steps are similar for other browsers, but not identical.

Deleting cookies: These consequences may occur

Deleting cookies can have both a positive and a negative effect on your browsing experience. Here are the main points:

  • Protection of privacy: Deleting cookies removes stored data such as surfing behavior, preferences and personalized advertising profiles. This makes it more difficult for advertisers and third parties to track users and create profiles.

  • Reducing data misuse: Cookies can potentially be misused by third parties to collect sensitive information. Regular deletion minimizes this risk.

  • Freeing up storage space: Cookies take up storage space on the hard drive. Regular deletion can help to free up this space, especially with intensive internet use.

  • Loss of comfort: Stored login data, preferences or shopping carts are deleted. Users have to log in again or manually restore their settings.

  • Limited functionality: Some websites require cookies for basic functions, such as storing language settings or GDPR consent. After deletion, these settings have to be re-entered.

  • Impairment of personalized advertising: While this is an advantage for some, deleting cookies can mean that advertising is less relevant because no personalized data is available.
