Quickly remove smoke & barbecue smell from clothes – this is how it works.

by Pramith

Whether at the Christmas market or at the campfire, clothes and especially jackets taking on the smell of smoke and barbecue are unfortunately an unavoidable by-product. Fortunately, we have the best tips and home remedies for you to quickly get rid of the stench.

Trick 1: Remove smoke smell from your clothes with vinegar water

If your clothes smell like smoke, charcoal and grease after the Christmas market or bonfire, it’s pretty annoying. But a simple trick banishes the smell quickly and easily:

What you need:White vinegar or vinegar essence and a spray bottle. Caution: Dark vinegar or balsamic will stain your clothes!

  • Pour cold water into the spray bottle. Leave about 3 cm free for the vinegar.
  • Add 5 tablespoons of vinegar; shake well.
  • Hang the clothes on hangers and spray them all over with the vinegar-water mixture. Do not soak them and let them dry outdoors.
  • Tip: Pour the vinegar water into a mini spray bottle. That way you always have your own odour remover with you when you travel.
  • Alternatively, you can also heat vinegar and water in a pot and hang the clothes over the steam.
  • The mixture is effective against all odours in clothing, e.g. the typical smell of grease and food or after a campfire.

  • Often, especially with low odour levels, it’s enough to hang your clothes outside for a short while and let the air and cold do their job.
  • There are sprays that were invented especially for removing odours from textiles, and thus also help against smoke smells.
  • Short drying in a dryer can also help remove unwanted odours through the heat and air.
