With rising energy costs, the power consumption of a dishwasher is also significant. It can vary greatly depending on the energy class and size.
The electricity consumption of a dishwasher
The electricity consumption of a dishwasher depends on several factors.
- First of all, the energy efficiency class has a great influence on the electricity consumption of the dishwasher.
- On average, a common dishwasher consumes between 850 and 1100 watts. A machine in energy efficiency class A+ consumes an average electricity cost per wash of about 24.8 ct, whereas an efficient dishwasher in class A+++ only costs 17.5 ct of electricity per wash.
- While the annual electricity costs of the inefficient dishwasher at 360 kWh per year thus amount to around 70 €, those of the efficient machine at around 200 kWh come to only 20-30 €. Over a period of 10 years, an electricity saving of more than 200 € can be achieved by comparing an efficient machine with an inefficient model.
- In addition to the energy efficiency class, the size of the appliance is also crucial. A 45 cm wide dishwasher (common for single households) uses about a third less electricity than a comparable appliance 60 cm wide.
Practical tips to reduce electricity consumption
There are several things you can do to reduce the electricity consumption of your dishwasher.
- First of all, it is advisable to operate the dishwasher only when it is really fully loaded. Only then will it be used efficiently and the noise level will be lower.
- Using the Eco programme can also save electricity. Due to the lower water temperature in the Eco programme, the water does not have to be heated above 50 degrees and therefore saves energy, as it only uses between 0.8 and 0.9 kWh. Due to the longer soaking time, your dishes will still be clean.
- Adapt your appliance to your individual needs as much as possible. For 1-2 person households, models with a width of 45cm are very suitable.
- Replace your appliance after about 10 years if possible to save electricity with the latest energy efficiency class.
