Since water is still a precious and expensive commodity, it can be useful to collect rainwater even on the balcony. With the collected water you can water flowers and save money.
Catching rainwater on the balcony : Here’s how to do it on open balconies
There are a variety of ways to collect rainwater in the garden. But water collection can also be implemented on the balcony with a few tricks and tips.
- For an open balcony, all you need is a sturdy tarp or awning. Then, attach a staple hook to the balcony lattice where you can hook the tarp. Cut a hole in the middle of the tarpaulin and wrap it with tape. Then weigh down the hole with a heavy object and place a collection container under the hole.
- Another method of collecting rainwater on an open balcony is the clothes rack method. Here, you unfold a clothes rack and attach a tarp to the outer poles that spills downward. Again, place a hole in the center of the tarp under which you place a collection container.
How to collect rainwater on covered balconies
This is another way you can catch rainwater on covered balconies.
- One possible option for catching rainwater on a covered balcony is a rain screen. Since this requires permission from the landlord, this option should not be used without consultation.
- Alternatively, you have the option of tinkering with a rain catchment system. To do this, build a large funnel. Take a canister, the bottom of which you cut off. In the spout then attach a garden hose. To stabilize it, fix the joint with tape. If you now fix the funnel so that it points diagonally outwards over the balcony parapet, the collected rainwater will flow away. To collect it, you can place a bucket or a small rain barrel under it.
