A VPN router provides more security in your network. By using a protected connection, your data remains private even on the Internet.
VPN router: what’s behind it
A VPN router routes the data traffic in your network via a so-called Virtual Private Network (VPN).
- This is useful if you want to automatically connect several devices in your network via VPN.
- Instead of connecting each device on your network to a VPN individually, the VPN router does the job. The router routes all traffic from the connected devices directly over the VPN.
- This applies not only to computers or mobile phones, but also to smart home devices or game consoles.
- This allows all the devices on your network to benefit from the security and anonymity of a VPN.
Setting up a VPN router: A general guide
Setting up a VPN router can vary depending on the model and VPN provider. These are general steps:
- First, select a VPN service and create an account. Popular VPN services include NordVPN, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost.
- Some routers already have a built-in VPN client, while others may require firmware to support the VPN client. Follow the router manufacturer’s instructions for installation.
- Normally, VPN services provide configuration files to download and install on the router. Using this data, the router then establishes the secure connection.
- Log in to the administration page of your router and navigate to the VPN section. Here you can upload the downloaded configuration files and make further settings. Among other things, you can select the VPN server with which a connection is to be established.
- After you have set everything up, you should test the VPN connection to make sure everything is working properly. Visit a website such as WhatIsMyIP.com and check that the IP address displayed is that of the VPN server you have chosen.
- Finally, you can connect your devices to the VPN router. All devices connected to the router now go to the Internet via the virtual network.
