If you do not want to use rechargeable batteries or batteries for a longer period of time, you should store the energy storage devices correctly. In addition to the right place, the right temperature is also crucial.
Storing batteries and rechargeable batteries properly
A rechargeable battery loses life with each charge, but also ages over time. Although the wear and tear cannot be prevented, it can be significantly reduced.
- The best place to store batteries is in a cool, dry cellar. However, a drawer protected from light will also do in a pinch.
- Life is shortened especially at high temperatures. Therefore, store batteries and rechargeable batteries as cool as possible, but not too cool. Temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius are ideal.
- If you want to store a lithium-ion battery for a longer period of time, charge it up to about 50 to 70 percent. If the battery will not be used for several months, charge it again to 50 to 70 percent after a few weeks.
This is what you should know about rechargeable batteries and batteries
Only the old nickel-cadmium batteries (NiCd) have the so-called memory effect in which the battery remembers the current state. If possible, you should always fully charge these batteries.
- For several years now, you will only find lithium-ion batteries in almost all technical devices. These no longer have the memory effect.
- If possible, do not store a battery in a damp room or even in the refrigerator. This will not damage the battery directly, but it could cause dangerous condensation to form.
- You should also be careful with the temperature. Batteries can hardly tolerate temperatures below zero, and they quickly overheat if the temperature is too high.
- Batteries can also overheat if the temperature is too high.
