If your PC no longer emits any sound, this can have many causes. In this practical tip, we will show you what you can do to solve the problem.
No sound on the PC: Check the settings
If you no longer have sound on your PC, you should first rule out typical sources of error before checking the settings on your computer.
- Make sure that your loudspeaker and the application are not muted. Also, for external speakers, check that all cables are secure and, most importantly, in the correct sockets.
- If this is the case and you still cannot hear any sound, the window’s own troubleshooter may be able to help. To open this, go to the sound settings on your computer. You can do this in the settings by clicking on “System” and “Sound”.
- Click here under “Output” on “Troubleshooting” and wait for Windows to analyse.
- If no error is detected, it is possible that the wrong speaker is selected in the system. To change this, stay in the settings and click on “Sound – Control Panel”. You will find this entry on the right-hand side under “Related Settings”.
- Right-click on your speaker and select “Activate”. Click on “Set as default” to ensure that Windows automatically uses the loudspeaker as the output device in the future.
- Click on “OK” to save your settings.
Remedy driver problems
Especially after reinstalling Windows or installing a new sound card, driver problems can cause the unwanted silence.
- To check this, open the Device Manager from the Windows Start menu.
- Under “Audio, Video and Game Controllers”, find your sound card.
- Right-click on your sound card and select “Update Driver”.
- If an error is displayed, install the latest driver. Windows 10 drivers are available for download.
- If this does not work, uninstall the driver via the context menu and then install it again.
