From time to time you may see the words “Made in PRC” on products from China. This often causes astonishment, as the abbreviation “PRC” is rather unusual in this country
Made in PCR: What does that mean?
Every product we buy contains a reference to where the product was manufactured. The label begins with the words “Made in”, which means “Manufactured in”. This is followed by the English name of the country in which the product was manufactured.
- This is usually easy to understand, such as “India” or “China”. The abbreviation PRC stands for “Peoples Republic of China” or in German “Volksrepublik China”.
- When “PRC” is indicated as the country of manufacture and when “China” is indicated is not officially regulated.
- Please note that the country of manufacture only indicates the country in which the last processing step was carried out. For example, a fabric can be produced, cut and sewn in India, but the T-shirt can only be dyed and printed in Germany. It is then considered “Made in Germany.”
What does “Made in PRC” say about quality?
Many consumers associate products from China with low prices and poor quality. However, this prejudice is not generally true. The following should be noted:
- Premium manufacturers from a wide range of industries also have their products manufactured in China in order to save costs. Labor costs there are far lower than in Western Europe, for example. However, this does not necessarily mean poorer quality
- Products that are produced in China for the German market must also comply with our local safety regulations. Otherwise the import would not be permitted at all. You can therefore also expect a certain standard of quality from goods produced in China.
