Laptop: Disable keyboard – this is how it works

by Corinna

The keyboard of laptops can be deactivated with a few clicks. For this, the device manager is available via the control panel.

Disable the keyboard of the laptop

If your laptop does not have an Fn key to disable the keyboard, you can resort to Device Manager.

  • Open the Start menu and navigate to the search bar. Type Device Manager and select the application. It belongs to the Control Panel.
  • Within the Device Manager, at the bottom of the listed devices you will find the category Keyboards. Select it.
  • Now you will see all available keyboards. Click on the desired laptop keyboard and deactivate it using the red X in the taskbar. Alternatively, right-click on the keyboard and disable it using the Uninstall Device command.
  • Most laptop keyboards are automatically reactivated after a system reboot. In this case you simply have to deactivate them again.
