Key duplication – costs and important information

by Mike

If you have lost your key or it is broken, you can have your key made again. In this article, we have summarised what costs you will have to pay and what you should be aware of.

Make a new key – important info

Basically, you can have any normal key made without any problems.

  • If it is a security key or the key of a locking system, you need a so-called security certificate from your landlord. This entitles you to have the key copied. Locksmiths are not allowed to make a copy without this authorisation.
  • Often a special key blank is also required for the key copy of a locking system. You can also obtain this from your landlord.
  • The landlord must be given all copies of the keys when you move out.
  • You should inform your landlord immediately if you have lost a key.
  • If the door has fallen into your lock, by the way, you can open the front door without a key.

Cost of copying keys

The cost of having a key copied depends largely on the type of key.

  • For a standard key, the cost of duplicating the key is between 10 and 20 euros.
  • For keys of a locking system or security keys, there is a cost of between 20 and 100 euros, depending on the type.
  • If it is a car key, contact your specialist garage. There you will need your vehicle and identification papers, otherwise the garage will not copy a key for you. This is for your own protection. A new car key, depending on the brand and coding, can cost between 50 and 350 euros.
  • If the car key is lost or stolen, you must also inform the police and insurance company. If you only have the car key made, however, there are also Internet providers who offer this for as little as 20 euros.
