Smartphones or smartwatches are often certified with IPX7. We explain what the abbreviation means and whether your device is waterproof with it.
IPX7 – Waterproof according to protection class standard
Devices with IPX7 are considered to be conditionally waterproof. A more detailed explanation:
- The abbreviation IPXX describes the degree of protection of electrical equipment.
- The first X-digit makes statements about the dust protection. The values usually range from 0 to 6. The higher the value, the more resistant the unit. If the information is not relevant or has not been checked, the “X” is simply left blank.
- The second X-digit describes the protection against water. The values range from 0 to 9. At level 7, the smartphone should withstand temporary submersion according to the standard description. However, the device can only withstand permanent contact with water at level 8.
- You should therefore be able to wear a smartwatch with IPX7, such as the Apple Watch, while showering, but you should not subject it to longer dives.
- The manufacturers are responsible for the ratings themselves, there is no independent testing. So if in doubt, you should tend to be cautious.
