IP address: Find out your own or someone else’s – this is how to do it

by Mike

You don’t have to be an IT professional to find out your own or someone else’s IP address. Here we show you how to find out your own IP address or that of a third-party server.

How do I find out my IP address?

You can easily find out your own IP address from Windows 8 onwards.

  • First press [Win] + [R] simultaneously to open the “Run” window.
  • Enter “cmd” here and confirm with “OK”.
  • It opens the command centre (CMD). Now enter “ipconfig” in CMD.
  • You will find your IP at the entry “IPv4 address”.

Find out a foreign IP address

Find out the IP of a third party computer that you can reach via the Internet by using the Windows command prompt.

  • To do this, enter “cmd” in the search bar of the Start menu and confirm with [Enter]. Alternatively, you can also open CMD as described above.
  • Type “ping example.com” into the console. Replace “example.com” with the address whose IP you want to know and press [Enter].
  • In the results you can now read the foreign IP address in several places.

Online Tools: Quickly find out the IP address online

You can also find out your own IP through various tools online.

  • WhatIsMyIP.com will show you your IPv4 and IPv6 address.
  • You can also find the location of the Internet node you are connected to.
