Installing memory – a few things to watch out for

by Pramith

Installing RAM is not difficult. You can insert compatible modules into your desktop PC or laptop without any prior knowledge.

Installing RAM: Use suitable modules

When buying RAM, you must make sure that it is compatible with your computer.

  • The main thing to consider here is the memory type. The built-in mainboard only offers space for a specific format from the following: DDR1, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5. Only use RAM modules from the same manufacturer, as different ones often do not work together.
  • You can find out which RAM format you need by checking your computer’s system information. Alternatively, check your mainboard’s operating instructions.
  • Furthermore, you must ensure that desktop PCs primarily use DIMM modules. For laptops, you need the smaller version called SO-DIMM. Desktop computers with SO-DIMM compatibility are rare.
  • Tip: You will need a suitable tool for installation. In particular, small screwdrivers that match the screws of your computer cover are important.

Installing new RAM: Instructions for desktop PCs

If there are still slots available on your PC’s mainboard, you can install the new RAM in parallel. If all the slots are occupied, you will need to replace the old modules.

  • Turn off your computer completely and unplug the power cable at the back. Then remove the screws on the back of the cover to open the PC.
  • Now you have to be especially careful. If possible, do not touch the mainboard at all. Use only your hands for the installation and no other tools.
  • On the left and right of the RAM modules that are already installed, you will find a switch, usually white. Simply flip it outwards and the RAM can be removed directly.
  • Insert the new RAM and press it down with a little pressure. The RAM latch clicks into place. Then reattach the white switches.
  • If you have more than two slots, make sure that the RAM modules are arranged in the correct order. For four slots, the sequence is usually as follows: DIMM-A1, DIMM-B1, DIMM-A2, DIMM-B2.
  • If, for example, you are using two RAM modules, you only need to occupy the DIMM-A1 and DIMM-B1 slots. These work together in the same way as DIMM-A2 and DIMM-B2 and so on.
  • Now you can screw your computer back together and start using it.
