Installing a new processor – what you need to know
In this practical tip, we show you what you need to bear in mind when installing a new processor in your PC.
Installing a processor: Safety Basics
Before you start the installation, pay attention to these points:
- When working with computer components, you should generally never do so on a carpet. The friction of the carpet and your clothing can create an electrical charge sufficient to render a processor inoperable.
- To be on the safe side, we recommend that you wear a grounding wrist strap when working with computer hardware. The wrist strap is simply placed around the wrist and attached to the case with the crocodile clip.
- Tip: Get yourself an anti-static kit. It contains everything you need for safe installation.
Install the processor in the computer: These are the steps
After you have opened the PC case, proceed as follows:
On the mainboard, flip the CPU socket lever and open the retainer.
- On the CPU socket and the processor, there is a small triangle in one corner. Make sure they are aligned the same way. Furthermore, newer processors have prominent notches that only allow the processor to be inserted in one direction.
- Carefully place the processor into the socket, making sure that it is securely seated in the socket. Be careful not to force the processor into the socket. If the processor does not fit into the socket, it is probably misaligned.
- You can then close the lever again and remove the plastic cover. When you lock the lever, you have to apply a little pressure.

In order to prevent the new processor from overheating, it is important to install a cooler
- Apply a drop of thermal paste to the centre of the processor. Once you install the cooler, the paste will spread evenly.
- Place the cooler on the processor at an angle and fix one side first. Then place the cooler straight on the processor and fix the other two fixed points.
- Connect the fan cable of the cooler to the “CPU FAN” or “FAN” connector on your mainboard.
