How to clean the Epson print head

by Corinna

To get the best printing results, you should clean the print head of your Epson printer regularly. There are certain steps you need to take to do this.

Cleaning the print head on Epson printers – here’s how to do it

If you find streaks or unprinted or pale areas on your printouts, in many cases the nozzles of the print head are clogged. Cleaning the print head can help.

  • There you will find the entry “Printhead Cleaning”. After you have pressed “OK”, the printer will start cleaning automatically.
  • Then print any document again to check the success of the cleaning. Alternatively, you can print a test page in the “Maintenance” menu to check all colours individually.
  • You can also start the print head cleaning from the PC. To do this, right-click on the “Epson Status Monitor” in the task bar and select “Printhead Cleaning”.

When you have finished, take another close look at the cartridges and their holders.

  • If you have not used the printer for a long time and the cartridges are low on ink, the ink may have dried on the print head. Remove the cartridges and carefully remove dried residue with a toothpick.
  • Be aware that you should only use genuine ink cartridges. Cheap cartridges can dry out more quickly and therefore do not achieve the desired quality.
  • If you cannot see any obvious dirt, the print head must be cleaned manually. There are two options for this. Either use a special cleaning kit or remove the print head and carefully clean it with rubbing alcohol.
  • Cleaning with alcohol is much cheaper, but also requires more effort. To find out how to remove the print head, refer to your printer’s manual. For many models you can also find video instructions.
