Hard disk: testing speed – how to

by Tobias

There are several ways to test the speed of your hard disk. We will show you possible options.

How can I test the speed of my hard disk?

There are several ways to test the speed of your hard disk. For example, you can use integrated Windows tools.

  • Task Manager: Open the Task Manager by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Del or right-clicking on the taskbar. Select the “Performance” tab. Click on the desired hard disk to see detailed speed information.

  • PowerShell: Open PowerShell as administrator. Enter the following command to test the read speed: “winsat disk -seq -read -drive x” – replace “x” with the drive letter. For the write speed, use: “winsat disk -seq -write -drive x”.

Choose the method that best suits your needs. The built-in Windows tools are quick and easy to use, while specialized software can provide more detailed results.

  • CrystalDiskMark is a popular tool for Windows 10 and 11. The program measures sequential and random read/write speeds. It’s easy to use – just select your drive and click “Start.”

  • EaseUS Partition Master offers a DiskMark function to test hard disk speed. It supports internal and external drives, including SSDs and USB sticks.

  • Other tools are also available. For example, use PassMark PerformanceTest. It compares performance with similar computers worldwide. ATTO Disk Benchmark is used by drive manufacturers for development and testing.

  • AS SSD Benchmark was developed specifically for SSDs and uses incompressible data. HD Tune offers additional features such as error detection and health status checks.
