Connecting an external hard drive to the PS5 is especially worthwhile if you have a lot of big games in your possession and need a suitable place to store them.
PS5: How to connect an external hard drive
In order to expand the storage space of your PS5, it is a good idea to connect an external hard drive. This way, you can easily swap out large games that require a lot of memory. To do this, proceed as follows:
- There are several connections on the back of the PS5. You can connect your hard disk to the USB-A slot.
- Alternatively, use the USB-C port located on the front of the PlayStation.
- Note: You cannot play PS5 games swapped to the hard drive from this location. For this, the games must be on the PS5. However, the external hard disk is definitely worthwhile as a storage space for games that are not currently needed.
- To format and use the hard drive, go to the “Settings” menu on the console and then to the “Storage” tab. Then select the item “Extended USB storage”. Finally, go to the item “Format as extended USB memory”.
- Caution: All data on the hard drive will be deleted when formatting! So make sure that you have backed up your data beforehand.
- To move games to the external storage location, select the game in the main menu and press the Options button. You can then move the game to the external hard drive.
