By connecting 2 monitors to your laptop, you expand your options with more space. However, keep in mind that many models only allow one additional monitor.
Connect 2 monitors to laptop: Via HDMI, Displayport or VGA
If you have a standard PC monitor, simply connect it to your laptop via the HDMI, Displayport or VGA port.
- Connect the monitor via either the HDMI, Displayport, or VGA port on the laptop.
- On most laptops, you make settings for using the 2nd monitor using the “Fn” key and an “F” key.
- This allows you to expand the desktop or project the image from the laptop to the monitor. You also decide whether to use only one screen or both.
- For information on whether your laptop supports multiple external monitors, refer to your laptop’s manual. Most devices are not able to do so, even if two connectors exist.
- In addition, there are also monitors, like the Asus MB169B+, which you connect via a USB slot. These are also supplied with power via the USB connection at the same time.
- Tip: Simultaneous operation of two monitors via a VGA or HDMI interface and via USB works fine with most laptops.
- As an alternative to the device’s own ports, you can connect an external monitor via docking station. Owners of MacBooks enjoy a particularly large selection of docking stations, but you can also find numerous docking stations online for laptops from other manufacturers.
Connect tablet to laptop as a monitor
An Android tablet or iPad can also be used as a second monitor. Here we show you the necessary apps:
- Download the Windows version or the Mac version of “iDisplay” and install the program.
- Then install the app for your iPad or Android tablet.
- For the iPad version, the laptop and iPad must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. You then simply enter the IP address of your Mac in the app.
- Your Android tablet can also be connected via WLAN. You also have the option of connecting your device to the laptop with a USB cable. This helps especially when you are on the road and there is no WLAN network available.
- Now your tablet can be configured as a monitor.
Helpful programs for multiple monitors
If you have problems using the second monitor, the following programs will help you:
- “DisplayFusion”: With this program you can choose suitable backgrounds for your monitors. The tool stretches the images and drags them across both monitors. Your images should therefore have a high resolution.
- “MurGeeMon”: To control all monitors perfectly, this program helps you. For example, you can use it to change the resolution of one of your monitors. Organizing your output devices is very easy with it.
- “Dual Monitor Taskbar”: If you have a second monitor connected, your taskbar will only appear on one of the monitors. The program “Dual Monitor Taskbar” remedies this and extends your taskbar to all monitors.
