It’s normal for earwax to build up on your AirPods over time, so be sure to clean your headphones and accessories regularly.
Earwax on AirPods: How to clean your headphones
To get the most out of your AirPods for as long as possible, it is important to clean the headphones regularly. Because of the many small openings, it can quickly happen that earwax gets into the headphones and affects the sound quality.
- First wipe the surface of the AirPods with a microfibre cloth slightly moistened with clean water.
- Now put some isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab and use it to work on the openings of the AirPods. No liquid should drip inside the case.
- Let the rubbing alcohol air dry briefly, then wipe again with a dry microfibre cloth.
- You can try to loosen stubborn dirt from earwax on the AirPods with a toothpick and remove it with compressed air. However, please note that the AirPods are sensitive and should not be scratched or handled with sharp objects.
- Silicone attachments like those on the AirPods Pro can be easily cleaned with a little running water. However, do not use washing-up liquid.
- You can also clean the AirPods charging case with the microfibre cloth for light dirt. For stubborn dirt, use the rubbing alcohol again.
- Tip: There are also special cleaning sets for AirPods that make it particularly easy to remove earwax from the openings.
