Wordle – Instructions: How the game works

by Johannes

With the right Wordle instructions, you can solve the daily word puzzle. Every day, this browser game challenges you to find a five-letter word in six attempts.

Solving Wordle: These instructions will help

You have six attempts to solve the daily Wordle game in the Wordle browser. Wordle was developed in 2021 by software developer Josh Wardle for his partner – when he made it available to the public, the word puzzle spread rapidly across social media within a few months. In early 2022, the New York Times took over the game with a promise to keep the user experience as unchanged as possible. Nevertheless, there were some changes.

  • However, the aim of the game is still to guess an English word with five letters within six attempts. After each attempt, you receive color-coded clues. A green code tells you that the letter is correct and in the right place. Yellow means that the letter is in the word but in the wrong place. Gray means you need to think again, because the letter does not appear in the solution word.

  • There is exactly one new puzzle every day, creating a sense of excitement and community – after all, millions of people are puzzling over the same word at almost the same time.

  • Here’s how to play: Visit the official New York Times website for the game. You will see an empty grid with six rows – each row represents a guess.

  • Type any five-letter English word in the first row. Recommended starting words contain common letters and several vowels, ideally without any duplicate letters, as this reduces the number of letters you have to test. Good examples are: table, crane, slate, or audio. Letters that are not in Wordle are gray. Letters that you guess correctly are either yellow or green.

  • Use the color clues for your second attempt, where you think of a second word and slowly feel your way forward. Avoid letters that were gray, but keep green letters in the same position. Try yellow letters in a different position.

  • For a better overview, look at the keyboard at the bottom of the game. Here, colors also mark the letters.

  • Start with a strong word and use the feedback wisely. Avoid letters that have already been marked as incorrect. Also, pay attention to common letter combinations such as TH, SH, ST, and CH in English.

  • Looking for a bigger challenge? Then activate Hard Mode in the settings. This requires you to use all letters recognized as correct in the subsequent puzzles.

These are the rule changes made by the New York Times

Since being taken over by the New York Times, there have been some significant changes. These adjustments are intended to ensure greater fairness and comprehensibility, especially for people who are not native English speakers.

  • Curated word list: The original word list has been revised. Politically sensitive, rare, or obsolete words are no longer included in the game.

  • Exclusion of certain words as solutions: Although you can still enter many terms, not all of them are considered possible solutions.

  • Consistency in difficulty: The New York Times wanted to broaden the target audience for the game. The difficulty level therefore remains constant unless you specifically select the difficult version.

Alternatives to Wordle

Would you like more than one puzzle per day or would you prefer to play in German? That’s also possible – but not with Wordle, rather with other providers. Unlike the original, many alternatives offer several puzzles per day, their own statistics systems, and creative variations on the basic idea.

  • For example, you can experience the classic game principle in German in “Wördl.” “Wortle” is also available in German, but is usually a little more difficult.

  • If you want to practice your foreign language skills, you can do so in Portuguese with Letreco and Termo, or in French with Le Mot.

  • If you want to stick with English but solve more puzzles per day, there are providers such as Quordle with four puzzles at a time, Octordle with eight puzzles, and Absurdle, where the game plays against your solution.

  • If you don’t want to miss your daily dose of Wordle, you can also join the social media community behind it. Players usually share their results without spoilers using the familiar emoji graphics. Memes, competitions, and strategy discussions in forums and on platforms such as Reddit also contribute to the game’s enduring popularity.
