The Witcher 4 is the long-awaited sequel to the Witcher trilogy about Geralt of Rivia. The game is supposed to serve as the prelude to a new trilogy.
The Witcher 4: Release not yet known
The Witcher 4 was officially presented at the Game Awards 2024 with a six-minute trailer featuring Ciri as the protagonist. The new open world RPG, codenamed Polaris, currently has no planned release date (as of December 2024).
- The reason for this lies in the start of the game’s development. Polaris was announced on March 21, 2022, and in an interview with the Reuters news agency in January 2024, the game was scheduled to go into development from the middle of that same year.
- This was confirmed in November 2024 by Sebastian Kalemba via a tweet on X. Kalemba is a game director at CD Project Red and is therefore directly involved in the development.
- According to CD Projekt S.A. CEO Adam Badowski, the Polaris team will have a size of over 400 people involved in the development. Game Director will be Sebastian Kalemba, the lead animator of Witcher 3.
- Due to the size of the team and the use of Unreal Engine 5, it can be assumed that The Witcher 4 will not be released until 2026 or 2027 at the earliest. It could take even longer. We will keep you informed about a more precise date or release period.
- Note: The platforms on which The Witcher 4 will be released are also not yet known. Since the UE5 is being used, a PC and console release can be assumed.
The Witcher 4: Content at a Glance
Since the latest installment in the video game series of the Witcher saga is still in the early stages of development, the information about the content is not yet that extensive. In any case, it will be a single-player RPG with an open world.
- You take on the role of Ciri, the foster daughter of Geralt von Riva, who, judging by the trailer, will appear as a monster hunter herself. Nevertheless, the game ties in with the previous trilogy, which starred Geralt.
- Geralt will still appear in Polaris, according to the English dubbing actor Doug Cockle, who lends his voice to the witcher. This information comes from a YouTube video by the channel Fall Damage with Cockle. The game will not revolve around Geralt and how big his role will be is not yet known.
- Ciri will belong to the School of the Lynx in the fourth part. The teaser image and the trailer show a lynx amulet. Since the Lynx School comes from a fan fiction by the authors Smiki55 and Witcher190, it is interesting to see if this will have an impact on the story of the game.
- With the switch to Unreal Engine 5, the studio says the focus will be even more on freedom while gaming. The well-known, Slavic-inspired world is said to be darker than in its predecessors.
- The focus is on decisions that will have a much greater impact on Ciri, her acquaintances and the world. That sounds like plot lines whose outcomes can change quickly.
- Ciri will also shine with her sorcerer skills alongside her magical powers. This should be clearly evident in the combat system. She has aged by a few years and it will be interesting to see what she has learned.
