“The Last of Us 3” is not currently in the starting blocks as a game. HBO is only working on the next series season. Nevertheless, thanks to a few clues, fans are hoping for a sequel to the game.
“The Last of Us 3”: This is known about a possible sequel
Both gamers and series fans get their money’s worth with “The Last of Us”. While enthusiastic series fans will be able to stream the second season on Sky from April and even have clarity about a third season, gamers are waiting impatiently for some news. Whether the third version of the action-adventure game will be released and when is completely unclear.
- Nevertheless, Neil Druckmann, studio head of Naughty Dog and co-creator of the series, personally fueled speculation about a sequel.
- At the end of the documentary “Grounded II”, which actually sheds light on the creation of “The Last of Us 2”, he says that a concept for “The Last of Us 3” definitely exists.
- Nevertheless, the statements are extremely vague, especially since he emphasizes that the decision about a sequel is also left to his team.
- On top of that, they have already written a small story about Tommy that would take place after “The Last of Us 2”. However, this is not enough for a whole game. “I hope, one day, we get to make it,” says Druckmann nevertheless (translated: “I hope one day we can implement it”), but at the same time makes it clear that this story will not be used as “The Last of Us 3”.
- While “The Last of Us 1” is about unconditional parental love, “The Last of Us 2” is more about seeking justice for loved ones. Druckmann emphasizes that this would already be a good ending, even if there were no further sequels.
- He makes it clear: He would like to work out a third part, but also supports other projects if they are preferred.
- At the time of the documentation in February 2024, however, he had no story, only a concept of it in his head. The focus of this would also be to develop a separate storyline that would still have connecting elements to parts 1 and 2.
- In a podcast appearance with Ken Levine, Druckmann also hinted that he has been working on a project that is still relevant today since 2020. Many hope that “The Last of Us 3” might be in the starting blocks for 2025 after all. However, this is by no means confirmed.
- In an interview with Deadline magazine, Francesca Orsi from HBO even hinted that Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin already had a vision for part 3.
That’s how “The Last of Us 2” ended
While the third season of the “The Last of Us” series is supposed to make use of many elements from the second game, nothing is yet known about the content of a third game. However, the ending of “The Last of Us 2” caused controversy.
- The sequel to Part 1 ends with a bitter struggle between Ellie and Abby, with the former seeking revenge for the death of Joel.
- Abby, who killed Joel, had hoped that this act of revenge would bring her some kind of release, but it didn’t.
- Both characters realize that revenge doesn’t give them what they had hoped for. In the end, Naughty Dog lets them both survive the final battle.
- By the way: the HBO series “The Last of Us” doesn’t necessarily seem to have many sequels in store either, as Francesca Orsi of HBO explained in an interview with Deadline magazine.
