Starfield: Choosing a background – these are the best starting conditions

The background in Starfield is an important point during character creation. It gives you your first skills at the start of the game

Starfield: Background explained

When you create your character in Starfield, you must choose one of the 21 backgrounds.

• The backgrounds are a game mechanic that primarily affects the start of the science fiction RPG and your desired build. You can therefore select a background to suit your desired play style.

• Each background in Starfield directly unlocks three abilities in the skill tree. You don’t have to invest any points for these yourself at the start and can optimize your build accordingly.

• For example, if you are interested in exploring your environment in as much detail as possible, the background explorer is a good choice. This immediately invests in the Analysis and Astrodynamics skills, which are ideal for this

• The selected background makes it easier to take your character in a certain direction. However, this does not prevent you from skilling completely differently later in the game.

• In addition, you can always meet NPCs in the background, for whom corresponding dialog options are available. This is particularly interesting for the role-playing flair.

Choosing a background in Starfield: 5 featured

Starfield doesn’t make it easy for you to choose a background at the start. After all, there are over 20 available. The following five backgrounds offer a good starting point for different play styles:

• With the Soldier background, you are better protected against damage and deal much harder. As you have also mastered the Boostpack Training skill, you can use jetpacks right at the start of the game

• If you have no problem getting your hands dirty for credits instead, become a bounty hunter. You’ll unlock all the necessary skills for space battles directly, which will make your hunt easier.

• With the Industrialist background, on the other hand, you are better at convincing others and picking locks without any problems. Although this selection is not as effective in combat, you can use your powers of persuasion to wriggle out of tricky situations.

• The Diplomat background is even more effective in this respect. Diplomats are persuasive, make good deals thanks to their trading skill and start the adventure with more health.

• If you want to be on the safe side, choose the medic instead. This background provides you with the most important skills to survive longer at the start. Nevertheless, you are excellent with a pistol

• Important: This is only a small selection of the backgrounds available for your character. Since Starfield offers an extensive New Game Plus, you can always try out a new background.
