PlayStation VR2: Release date, price and more
The PSVR2 for the PlayStation 5 has many technical innovations, mainly details that should improve the immersion of the VR experience.
- The official release of the PlayStation VR 2 was on 22 February 2023.
- The price of the PSVR2 is 600 euros. In a bundle with the game Horizon Call of the Mountain you pay 650 euros.
- There is a new charging station for the Sense controllers – if you want to buy the accessory, you pay another 50 euros.
- The PlayStation VR2 gets its own headset this time around, which should also make the sound experience even more immersive. The headset also gives feedback via vibration.
- Another technical innovation compared to the first generation of PlayStation VR: The glasses use eye tracking to create better graphics (keyword: foveated rendering). At the same time, eye tracking is also supposed to have an effect in the game, for example when you interact with NPCs or aim a weapon.
- The ring around the Sense controllers helps VR technology sense your movements in space. Haptic feedback from the buttons and vibration are said to enhance the gaming experience.
- Furthermore, the PSVR2 has a direct broadcast function for streaming.
Is the PlayStation VR2 backwards compatible?
For those who own multiple generations of PlayStation or already own the PSVR1, there’s no getting around the question of compatibility with the new virtual reality system.
- Compatibility: The PSVR2 is only compatible with the PlayStation 5. So you can neither play PSVR games of the first generation nor connect the system to a PlayStation 4.
- Cross-Buy: You bought a game for the PSVR1? Then in most cases you will get the game for free for the PSVR2, as long as it is available for the system. The same applies the other way round: If you have bought a game for the 2nd generation, you will also receive it for the first. However, the publisher decides whether games are available for free, not Sony itself.
