CIV 7 on the Xbox: How to play the game on Xbox consoles
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII was released on February 11, 2025. The game is not only available for PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation, but also for the Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S and the Xbox One.
- If you have purchased the digital version of CIV 7 for your Xbox or PlayStation, you can also play both game versions on other generations of the same console family.
- While the physical version of CIV 7 on PS5 does not support dual-gen, a dual-binary disk for the physical version for Xbox allows you to play the game on Xbox Series X and S as well as on Xbox One.
- With regard to backwards compatibility, the game creators explain on their website: As long as the consoles are linked to the same account, you can also play the digital Xbox One version of Sid Meier’s Civilization VII on the Xbox Series X or S.
What’s new in Sid Meier’s Civilization VII?
As a fan of the Civilization series, you can look forward to a varied game with new game mechanics and strategic challenges:
- In the basic version, CIV 6 contained 18 civilizations – CIV 7 goes one better here and offers 31 civilizations for you to choose from.
- Unlike in CIV 6, however, you don’t have to commit to one civilization at the beginning of the game, but play with a different civilization in each era. You can choose from 10 to 11 civilizations per era.
- In CIV 7, you play in the ancient world, the age of exploration, and the modern age. So there are three ages in total. Unlike in CIV 6, however, there are innovations in the modern age, which ends in 1950.
- Another change compared to previous versions: All civilizations switch between eras simultaneously.
- And there are also innovations with regard to the leaders: You select your leader at the beginning of the game, without them switching with the civilizations.
- This allows you to plan further ahead and develop your strategy for the long term. The leader’s talent tree, which allows ever more specialization, also helps you with this.
