Lost Ark – what you need to know as a free-to-play player
The MMO Lost Ark, developed in South Korea, dispenses entirely with a paid subscription model and allows you to play the game completely free of charge. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- You can download Lost Ark for free on Steam and start playing immediately.
- Compared to other pay-to-play MMORPGs like Elder Scrolls Online or New World, you can experience all of the game’s content without spending a single cent. This means that you don’t have to give up anything in character creation as well as in active play.
- However, in Lost Ark you have the option of taking out an optional paid subscription in the game. This brings a few conveniences with it, such as free use of the fast travel system, which would otherwise cost a few hundred silver, as well as the reduction of various cool-downs and timers, so that, for example, the recall to the hometown can be used more often.
- For new players, the developer Smilegate also offers so-called Starter Packs on Steam, which contain various items at different price levels. For example, the middle pack for €34.99 contains a pet, a mount, an item starter chest, a character slot coupon and a month of subscription service. It’s important to note that you can get both Pets and Mounts for free in-game.
- In the game itself you will also find the Cash Shop. In it, you can find a variety of convenience items and cosmetic items such as costumes for your character as well as new mounts and pets.
- Developer Smilegate announced before the release in the West that there will be no pay-to-win items to keep the game fair for all players. So you won’t be able to buy better armour or better abilities for your character with real money.
- If you are an Amazon Prime customer and link your Amazon Prime account to Twitch, you will benefit from the free monthly items you receive on Twitch for the game. There is no extra cost to you for this outside of your existing Amazon Prime subscription.
