Play 3DS games on Nintendo Switch: Is that possible?
To make a long story short: No, Nintendo 3DS games are not playable on the Nintendo Switch through official channels. The Switch is neither a re-release nor a successor to the Nintendo 3DS, which is why only titles developed specifically for the console will run on it.
- There will also be no support for 3DS modules in the future, as the Nintendo Switch does not have a suitable slot.
- Even if you have purchased digital versions of 3DS games from the eShop, they will only run on the original Nintendo 3DS hardware and not on the Nintendo Switch.
- However, Nintendo has already ported some games originally released for the 3DS to the Switch. Examples include Resident Evil Revelations, Monster Hunter Generations, Rune Factory 4 and Xenoblade Chronicles. So it’s possible that your favourite 3DS game is already available in an adapted version for the Switch, even if you’ll have to buy it again of course.
- While Nintendo has already made many older video games from other consoles available via emulation on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS, this so-called Virtual Console programme has not yet been launched on the Switch and it is questionable whether this would then also include 3DS titles.
- There is now an unofficial 3DS emulator for the Nintendo Switch, but this can only be run on hacked Switch consoles. However, this is no longer easily possible on current models of the Switch. Furthermore, downloading games for the emulator is illegal.
- Many games developed for the Nintendo 3DS could only be played on the Switch to a limited extent anyway, as 3DS games often make use of both displays of the handheld – and the Switch only has a single display. The 3D effect would also be impossible on the Switch screen.
