If you want to play online with your friends on the Nintendo Switch, you can use voice chat at the same time to better communicate.
Using voice chat on the Nintendo Switch: Instructions
The Nintendo Switch does not have built-in voice chat because the console does not have a built-in microphone. For this reason, you cannot use the handheld directly for voice chat, but must use the Nintendo Switch Online app.
- Important: You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for voice chat.
- Download the Nintendo Switch Online app for iOS or Android. Start the app on your smartphone and log in to your Nintendo account.
- Select a game on your Nintendo Switch that offers voice chat compatibility. These include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Splatoon 3 or Super Mario Party.
- Select the online mode of the respective game. Choose the game mode you want.
- Then check your smartphone. If the Start voice chat? notification appears, confirm the request.
- As soon as a player enters the room, voice chat is activated. You can now talk to each other via smartphone.
- Note: It is not possible to configure settings for voice chat via the Nintendo Switch settings. To do so, check the game settings. Not every title offers configuration options.
Nintendo Switch: Alternatives to app voice chat
If you find the voice chat provided by the application too cumbersome, there are other methods available on the Nintendo Switch.
- There are numerous games with built-in in-game voice chat that do not require the app. Popular examples include Fortnite and Friday the 13th.
- You simply activate voice chat via the game settings. To do this, you also need a headset with a built-in microphone to chat.
- Connect the headphones via Bluetooth when you use the docking station with the Switch. If you are playing on the Switch Lite or in handheld mode, you can also use wired headsets.
- In theory, any headset with a built-in mic should work. If you want to be on the safe side, the SteelSeries Arctis models are a good choice. These are specially designed for gaming and are compatible with the Nintendo Switch.
- Note: If you want to use Discord while gaming on the Switch, you can only do so via another device such as your smartphone or laptop.
