Axolotls in Minecraft are rare and peaceful creatures that can be found in lush caves. How to capture and breed them, you can read in this practical tip.
Find Minecraft axolotls in lush caves to take home
Since the Minecraft full release 1.17, there are the rare axolotls. They are found in huge water-flooded caves and occur naturally in four colours – pink, brown, gold and turquoise. Blue axolotls are extremely rare and only available through the player’s intervention.
- Unlike other peaceful water creatures, axolotls only appear in special caves (“lush caves”). To find such a cave in the depths, look for azaleas – small, one-block mini trees that sometimes bear purple flowers.
- Where such azaleas grow, dig down carefully. Take at least two buckets of water with you to trap them.
- Not all areas of the lush cave are flooded. You can recognise them by the mosses, moss blocks, small drip leaves and luminescent berries.
- When you have found an axolotl, click on the animal with a bucket of water (right click). To breed, you need at least two of these animals; the colours do not play a decisive role for mating.
How to get the rare blue axolotl
The reproduction of the axolotl is child’s play. The blue variety, however, is rare and is only created through mating. How to do this and what you need for mating axolotls, you can read in the next section.
- Axolotls can be mated by feeding them each a live tropical fish, which means it must not have been caught with a fishing rod, but must have come from a tropical fish bucket. You catch tropical fish in the same way as you caught the axolotl before – by right-clicking with a water bucket. You will find the fish species in large numbers in warm ocean biomes.
- There is about a quarter (about 24.98%) chance that the new axolotl created by mating will be the same colour as either of its parents. There is only a 0.083% chance that a blue axolotl will be produced instead. It is therefore advisable to mate the animals as often as possible. After five minutes your axolotls will be ready to mate again.
- Once picked up in the water bucket, axolotls (and other aquatic creatures) do not disappear, even if they are placed in open water. Their colour always remains, no matter how many times they are picked up and released again.
- Even though axolotls look cute – they will attack other aquatic creatures as soon as they see them (salmon, cod, puffer fish, tropical fish and even cuttlefish and shiners). If they have been fed on tropical fish, they will even attack drowned people and guardians.
- If the player assists an axolotl in hunting one of the water creatures mentioned, he receives the effect Regeneration for a short time. If an axolotl is injured (e.g. by a blow with the fist), it briefly receives the regeneration effect itself and plays dead.
