Learning to drive through PC games may sound absurd at first. However, there are now a number of driving simulators that have actually specialized in presenting the most realistic driving experience possible – and are therefore ideal for practicing driving techniques, traffic rules and behavior in traffic.
Games for learning how to drive: Realistic driving simulators
If you are looking for a suitable driving simulator to better prepare for your driver’s license, you will find it much easier than a few years ago. Although many racing games are still geared more towards speed and action, there are also a number of simulations that present driving extremely realistically – including traffic rules, vehicle physics and road conditions.
- City Car Driving (2023): City Car Driving from Forward Development is still one of the best simulators for novice drivers. The newer versions offer expanded city and country maps, dynamic weather conditions, more realistic AI drivers and a revised system for error evaluation. Particularly helpful are the individually adjustable traffic situations and learning modules, which can be used to practice behavior at intersections, traffic lights or in dangerous situations. Current VR systems such as Oculus Rift S or HTC Vive as well as modern steering wheels from Logitech, Thrustmaster or Fanatec are fully supported.
- DRIVE Sim (2022): A training simulator designed specifically for driving schools and private individuals. Includes EU-compliant traffic exercises, detailed evaluation systems and modular learning content.
- BeamNG.drive (regularly updated): with its unique soft-body physics system, this game realistically simulates damage and vehicle behavior. Ideal for understanding how cars react in dangerous situations.
- QEuro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator (regular updates): These two titles from SCS Software have come a long way since their origins. New updates regularly add new regions, truck brands such as MAN, Scania or Volvo, and realistic routing with complex traffic situations. The games train concentration, anticipatory driving and adherence to traffic laws on long journeys. The integration of VR and high-quality steering wheel accessories makes the experience particularly intense and realistic.
- Car Driving School Simulator (Mobile & PC): Particularly suitable for beginners, as simple controls are combined with realistic traffic management – good for first steps.
- R3E – RaceRoom Racing Experience: Although focused on racing, R3E offers impressive driving physics and is particularly helpful for practicing cornering, braking and visual guidance.
- Assetto Corsa (2019): While the original Assetto Corsa (2014) was still very much focused on racing, its successor Assetto Corsa Competizione offers even more realistic vehicle physics, weather dynamics and an authentic representation of GT3 and GT4 racing. Even though the focus here is more on racing technology, beginners learn a lot about vehicle behavior, reaction times and precise handling. All common VR headsets and professional racing cockpits are supported.
Benefits for beginners
Driving simulators offer numerous practical advantages for beginners:
- Safe practice of complex situations (e.g. parking, overtaking, highway entrances) without risk
- Memorizing traffic rules through repeatable, visual learning
- Improving responsiveness and dealing with unexpected situations (e.g. sudden braking by other road users)
- Stress-free repetition of difficult maneuvers or exam content
- Understanding of vehicle dynamics: How do different cars react on slippery, wet roads or when cornering fast?
