The Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body decides whether a game like Fortnite is recommended for ages 6 and up or 12 and up.
Is Fortnite for ages 6 and up?
The game Fortnite ranks high among children and young people. But how safe is the content for minors and what are the recommendations?
- The Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body (USK) has tested the game and is in favor of a 12+ rating. It is irrelevant in which modes the game is played
- The USK’s guidelines are not binding and merely serve as a guideline for parents. This gives you the opportunity to get a rough estimate of what content is suitable for your child.
- The age restriction of 12 years does not only apply to the shooter modes. The creative mode is also only recommended by the USK from the age of 12.
How suitable is Fortnite for children?
The depictions of the characters and the easy and free access to the game make Fortnite the ultimate game for young and old alike. Nevertheless, the game should be used with caution. The age 12 restriction may come as a surprise to some.
- Fast rounds, quick wins and the feeling of narrowly missing out on victory encourage the potential for addiction. Children under the age of 12 may find it difficult to stop playing
- In the game there is the option of making anonymous contact with other players. There is a possibility that your child may come into contact with people who are up to no good without thinking.
- Fortnite is free in every mode. But there are always suggestions to spend money. For example, to purchase skins or additional weapons. You should therefore keep an eye on access to PayPal or other payment systems when your child is playing
- Independent of the USK, your child should be able to understand and comprehend the handling of online games, playing times and in-game purchases. Have conversations and make agreements about how you can deal with the game and still have fun with it
