- The origin of this phrase dates back to 2009. In a forum post of the Metal Gear Online community, a member asks who came up with the term. Answers to the question suggest that it only appeared with this game.
- The term “git gud” comes from English (from “get good”) and means something like “get better”. It is meant to call on you to improve your skills.
- Through the then popular platform 4Chan, the phrase gained popularity and is still widely used in gaming today.
- Mostly used in PVP games like Call of Duty and particularly difficult titles like Dark Souls, the phrase spread among gamers. This also gave rise to “git gud or die tryin'”, which means “get better or die trying”.
- Today the term is mainly used when fellow players are whining about the game or a particular opponent. Especially new players often get to hear the phrase.
