What is curuba? Interesting facts about the fruit

by Tobias

You may wonder what curuba is. It is a fruit or berry, known as a passion fruit. Use it as an exotic ingredient in fruit salad, for example.

What a curuba is

Curuba is an exotic fruit better known as passion fruit. It has other names, such as banana passion fruit, parcha or taxo fruit.

  • In the meantime, the curuba imported from South America can be found all year round in a well-stocked supermarket in the fruit section. In February and March, it is also available elsewhere, as the fruit is then in season.

  • The yellow to orange skin is inedible. You have to peel it off. Ideally, cut the fruit open lengthwise. Spoon out the flesh. It is jelly-like and orange in color. There are black seeds in the flesh, which you can eat.

  • The flesh of the curuba tastes refreshing, slightly sour and sometimes spicy. In itself, however, the flavor is very mild.

  • If you don’t want to eat the seeds, scoop out the flesh and then pass the marrow through a kitchen sieve. Use the seeds as a topping for desserts such as creams or fruit salad.

  • You can add the fruit pulp to a fruit salad or stir it into desserts. You can also puree it with other ingredients to make a drink like a smoothie.

  • Since the flesh tastes slightly sour, it goes well with dairy products such as cottage cheese or yogurt. Refine the dairy products with a puree of the exotic fruit or add the flesh pure on top or stir it in.
