If you want to serve a mango in an original way, the so-called mango hedgehog is suitable. Read this article to find out what it is, how to prepare it and what alternative ways there are to cut a mango.
Cutting a mango hedgehog: How to do it
Whether it’s a buffet for guests, breakfast with the family or a snack for the kids – the mango hedgehog is a real eye-catcher. What’s more, it’s very easy to prepare. We have put together a step-by-step guide for you:
- Wash the mango: First of all, it is important that you wash the mango thoroughly with water.
- Two cuts along the core: Then the core should be removed. This is very flat in the mango compared to other fruits. Therefore, make two vertical cuts along the core of the mango – ideally, the cuts should be as close to the core as possible. The middle piece contains the core – we continue with the two outer halves.
- Cut the cubes without cutting through the skin: These two outer pieces should now be diced. To do this, make vertical and horizontal cuts in the mango. But be careful: you must not cut through the skin of the mango – this is urgently needed for the further process.
- Invert the mango: Now the mango becomes a hedgehog! Turn the two halves “inside out”. To do this, carefully press on the shell so that the cubes – or the tips of the hedgehog – are facing upwards. Voila! The mango hedgehog is ready!
- Use the leftovers: In the last step, you should still make sure to utilise the leftovers. The middle part, which was created in the second step, contains fruit flesh at the upper and lower end that can be eaten!
Serve mango: These options are available
In addition to the hedgehog method, there are other ways to serve or eat a mango. We have listed the alternatives that are available for you here:
- Mango in fine slices: For this, the mango must first be peeled. Then – as in step two of the mango hedgehog – make two cuts along the core. The two outer pieces can now be cut into fine slices.
- The corn on the cob method: This method is probably rather unconventional, but still very functional. For this, the mango must first be washed and peeled. Then you can skewer the fruit on a corncob holder. If you are particularly hungry, you now have the option of eating the mango like a corn on the cob.
- Alternatively, you can cut the flesh of the mango around the kernel with the help of the corncob holder. The corncob holder here serves as a holder during cutting, so to speak, and makes it easier to cut out the kernel.
- Mango in cubes: This is good if you want to prepare a fruit salad. To cut the mango into cubes, you can follow the instructions for the mango hedgehog. In the last step, you then separate the peel from the flesh.
