How much grilled meat per person? How to calculate correctly

by Johannes

For your next barbecue, you should know how much grilled meat you need per person so that everyone gets full and no food goes to waste.

BBQ: How to estimate how much barbecue meat is needed per person

There are several factors that come into play when calculating how much barbecue meat to eat. Each person is individual, thus has different energy needs and hunger. For the most accurate estimate, consider the age of your guests as well as their gender.

  • In addition to the circumstances of your guests, the side dishes you serve also play a role. If you serve lots of delicate side dishes, your guests will eat less meat. If there is only some baguette and a pasta salad as side dishes, experience shows that more meat will be eaten.
  • Children: Children eat the least. For children, you should plan for around 150 grams of meat. This is about the same as a small piece of meat and a sausage.
  • Women: Women usually eat about twice as much. You should plan on 250 to 300 grams of meat per woman. This is roughly equivalent to an average steak and a sausage or two to three burger patties.
  • Men: Because of their usually larger body mass, men also eat the most. You can expect 400 to 450 grams of meat per man. That’s about two average rump steaks.
  • Outliers: Of course, there are these at every barbecue party. Some guests will bring a very healthy appetite and others will eat rather less. Especially with children, the exact age also plays a role. However, experience shows that the outliers balance each other out.
