The deadline for exchanging your driving licence is 19 January 2033 at the latest. However, there are different deadlines by which you must exchange the grey or pink booklets in order to avoid a fine.
These are the deadlines for exchanging your driving licence
The last date for driver’s licence exchange is 19 January 2033.The exchange will be done at the driver’s licence office in your current place of residence.
- If the driving licence was issued before 31 December 1998, the year of birth of the licence holder is decisive.
- Drivers born in 1953 and 1954 actually have until 19 January 2022 to exchange their driving licence. Everyone else has a little more time.
- If you were issued a driving licence on or after 1 January 1999, the year of issue is decisive.
- The earliest you must have completed the exchange is 19 January 2026.
- Driving licences issued by 18 January 2013 must be exchanged by 19 January 2033.
- All Class B driving licences issued on or after 19 January 2013 are valid for 15 years each and must be renewed regularly.
- You do not, however, have to take any theory or practical driving tests or have any medical examinations for renewal.
The driving licence exchange procedure
You will need a valid identity card or passport, a biometric passport photo, your current driving licence and you will have to pay a fee of about 25 euros for the exchange.
- If the driving licence was not issued in your current place of residence, you will also need an index card transcript for the paper driving licences.

You will receive the index card copy by post, email or telephone from the issuing office, which will send the data directly to the current driving licence office.
- If you do not meet the deadline for exchanging your driving licence, you will be fined 10 euros.
