With a few simple procedures, you can easily clean your convertible top and lay the foundation for its lifespan. Whether it’s a seasonal car or a year-round car, the roof of a convertible needs an extra helping of care.
Cleaning the convertible top: How to do it
Summer, sun, convertible – for all fans of open-air driving, it can’t start soon enough. And the question always arises: What is the best way to keep the fabric top clean?
- With all types of cleaning, it is important that you allow the soft top to dry completely afterwards. This is the only way to avoid mould stains and colour changes.
- If you want to have the whole car cleaned, it is advisable to use a car wash with textile brushes so that the fabric structure of the soft top is protected. Also ask for special washing programmes that are suitable for textile roofs. For convertibles with a plastic window, car washes are generally taboo.
- Hand washing is still considered the gentlest way to clean a convertible roof. You can remove light dirt with a soft brush. Always work with the structure of the fabric. Bird droppings and tree sap should always be removed immediately, as they are quickly absorbed into the fabric and can leave permanent stains.
- If wet cleaning is necessary, wet the fabric roof well before shampooing in the soft top cleaner. (Please test on an inconspicuous area first.) Again, be sure to brush with the fabric texture and use mild pressure. Then rinse off the foam thoroughly until only clear water comes out.
- Use microfibre cloths or a wet-dry vacuum cleaner to remove the excess liquid until only a small amount of residual moisture remains. This should also be completely dried off before you fold the roof back in.
More convertible tips
Not only surface cleaning is essential for your convertible. Hinges and joints also need your attention.
- The most important thing in the longevity of convertible roofs is inspection. Therefore, look regularly for dirt and abnormalities in the seams. This way you can react in time. In some cases, such as leaks, it is advisable to seek expert advice.
- In addition to checking the fabric, you should also check the linkage of the soft top regularly. If necessary, grease the soft top joints and also the hinges regularly with a spray grease.
- Make sure the windows close properly to prevent moisture from getting inside the car. The rubber seals are best treated with a silicone spray.
- Whenever possible, do not park under trees. Birds also like to find a shady spot in summer and may defecate on your car. In addition, some tree species secrete a persistent resin that is difficult to remove from the fabric roof.
