The company Nothing, founded by Carl Pei, has launched the successor models Phone 2 and Phone 2a after the Phone 1. A direct comparison reveals the differences between the two.

• Price: The Nothing Phone 2 costs around 200 euros more than the Phone 2a, which is therefore the cheaper alternative. Depending on the offer, you can get the latter for as little as 330 euros. For the Phone 2, you need to budget from 549 euros

• Optics: With its aluminum frame, glass back and LED light strips, the Phone 2 is a real eye-catcher. But the 2a also scores points with its semi-transparent plastic back and rounded design

• Weight: The 2a is 190 grams lighter than the Phone 2.

• Display: The screen of both smartphones is the same size at 6.7 inches and the resolution is also the same at 2,412 x 1,080 pixels.

• Camera: The wide-angle main camera on both Nothing phones has a resolution of 50 megapixels and a 1.88 or 1.9 aperture (Phone 2). The front cameras manage 32 megapixels, although the sensor on the more expensive device is slightly higher quality

• Performance: Both devices are supplied with 8 or 12 gigabytes of RAM. While you have to make do with 256 GB of internal memory on the 2a, the Phone 2 can also be purchased with 512 GB of memory. The processor in the Phone 2 (Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1) is around 10 percent faster than in the 2a (MediaTek Dimensity 7200).

• Battery: The Phone 2 can be charged wirelessly – this is not possible with the cheaper 2a. Instead, the Phone 2a comes with a larger battery: it has a capacity of 5,000 milliamp hours, while the Phone 2 has 4,700 milliamp hours.

Buy a Phone 2 or 2a: Conclusion

The decision between the Nothing Phone 2 and the 2a variant is not an easy one, as both smartphones are very similar.

• If you value the typical look of the Nothing Phone with the LED lights on the back, you have to go for the Phone 2.

• If the features of the Phone 2a are sufficient for your purposes, you can purchase a smartphone on a smaller budget that can easily keep up with its big brother.
