Apple makes it particularly easy for its users to transfer data to a new iPad. We’ll show you how to automate the setup of your new device. This can be done quite simply wirelessly via Bluetooth or via the cloud.
New iPad: Transfer data with “Quick Start”
With Quick Start, you can transfer your data from an old iPad or your iPhone to the new device. To use the Quick Start feature, your iPhone must have iOS 12.4 or later installed, or your old iPad must have iPadOS 13.4 or later installed.
- First of all, enable the Bluetooth function on your existing Apple device. Now turn on your new device.
- Hold both devices together. A pop-up should appear on your already set up device to configure the new iPad.
- When the correct Apple ID appears to be used for setup, you can tap “Next”.
- Place your current iPhone or iPad on the new device and center it. An animation will show you exactly where to place it.
- As soon as you see the confirmation “Set up your new iPad,” you’ll need to authenticate to set it up. To do this, you can either scan a code with the camera or enter a displayed number code.
- Sign in with your Apple ID and set up Face ID or Touch ID.
- Now the iPad offers to restore your data, apps and settings from the last backup on iCloud. Alternatively, you can select a backup from your computer via the further options.
- In any case, you can immediately set more specific details about which data should be transferred, such as whether Apple Pay and privacy settings should also be set up automatically.
Transfer via device-to-device migration
Alternatively, you can use “device-to-device migration”. This involves connecting your devices either wirelessly or with a cable, although the latter is usually faster. The same system requirements apply as for “quick start”.
- Before you begin, make sure that both devices are charged so that the transfer does not stop.
- Start as described above. As soon as you are asked how you want to transfer your data, do not select the iCloud backup, but rather the transfer from an iPhone or iPad.
- The advantage of this is that the most up-to-date settings are applied. Depending on how long a backup has been on iCloud, data could be missing. In addition, this method is much faster with a cable connection.
- Your iPad will also ask you which data you want to transfer using this method.
