If you want to make Santa hats, you can use a variety of materials. Not only cardboard is suitable for the hats, but also cotton or felt.
This is how you make Santa hats out of cardboard
At Christmas time, Santa hats are very popular. However, you don’t have to buy the hats. You can also make them yourself in just a few steps. It’s fun and adds a festive touch to your Advent decorations.
- To make Santa hats out of cardboard, you need red construction paper, a few cotton balls, a pair of craft scissors, and a hot glue gun with glue sticks. Have all the utensils ready so you can start crafting right away.
- In the first step, cut out the red craft paper into rectangles of any size you like. Now shape these rectangles into cones by folding the paper.
- To fix the cones in place, apply a few dots of hot glue to the inside. This way, you won’t see any traces of glue, but the cap will remain in the shape of a cone.
- Cut off any excess corners or edges with craft scissors. These scraps will no longer be needed.
- Now place a dot of hot glue on the tip of your Santa hat and place a cotton ball on it. Your Santa hat is now ready.
- If you like, cut a long, narrow strip of cotton wool and fix it to the bottom edge of your Santa hat. This will make the Santa hat look even more authentic.
- The Santa hat is ideal for decorating bottles, bags, boots and plates. They look festive and very charming. You can also use a black marker to write a nice greeting or a name on the cap.
Make Santa hats out of fabric – it’s so easy!
Small Santa hats made of cardboard are perfect for decorating gifts. A Santa hat made of fabric, on the other hand, is suitable for costumes, to complete your own Christmas outfit or to make chairs festive.
- For the fabric Santa hats, you will need red cotton fabric or, optionally, felt. Also, have a little fake fur, a white pompom and the hot glue gun ready.
- First measure out the fabric for your project. You will need less fabric for a hat that you want to wear than for a chair cover.
- A Santa hat in the shape of a cone is best suited to your head. So cut the fabric into a rectangle and shape it into a cone.
- Use your hot glue gun to give the Santa hat its typical shape. Make sure that no traces can be seen from the outside.
- You can decorate the edge of your hat with fake fur. Use hot glue to attach it to the lower part of the hat.
- A large pompom on top will make your Santa hats perfect. If the pompom doesn’t want to stick to the tip of the hat with hot glue, just use a needle and a little white yarn. A few stitches are enough to firmly attach the pompom to the hat.
- If you want to put on your Santa hat made of fabric yourself, you just have to sew the two sides of the cone together. To make sure the hat fits on your head, you first have to measure your head circumference and cut the cone out of the fabric accordingly. Make sure to leave a few centimeters of leeway for the seam.
Make Santa hats as chair covers – here’s what to bear in mind
Decorate your chairs with Christmas chair covers designed like Santa hats. Red felt or cotton fabric, a little hot glue and white felt are also suitable for this.
- Cut out two pieces of red cotton fabric or felt in the shape of a house. To do this, measure the dimensions of your chair backrest with a flexible measuring tape. This will help to ensure that the cover fits over your chair backrest afterwards.
- Sew the two pieces of fabric together around the edges, leaving out the bottom of the house.
- Then turn the fabric over so that the seam is no longer visible. Carefully iron the fabric with a suitable iron. This will smooth the edges of the stitching.
- Now cut a narrow strip of white felt about five centimeters wide. The length should be enough to go around the cap.
- Sew this strip on as well using a needle and thread. You can also use a hot glue gun.
- A fluffy bobble on the tip of the hat completes your chair cover. Now pull the cover over the back of the chair. Fold the roof of the house outwards. The Santa hat for your chair looks perfect and conjures up a Christmas atmosphere in the dining room or kitchen.
