Drinking water from plastic bottles: unhealthy or safe?

by Pramith

Many of us still drink our water from plastic bottles, but is it actually unhealthy? Find out all the important info in our article.

Water from plastic bottles – really safe?

Plastic not only harms the environment, but is also not without controversy in terms of health. Plastic can have negative consequences for the body.

– Although there have been increasing reports of oestrogenic substances in plastic bottles in recent years, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has not found any evidence for this, according to its statement from 2011. Nevertheless, there is a need for further research and a health risk cannot be completely ruled out.

– Certain plasticisers are used in the production of PET bottles, for example bisphenol A (BPA). These substances can dissolve from the bottle and get into the drinking water that we then consume.

– In addition, water from plastic bottles often does not taste as good as tap water. Often the water tastes a little sweet. If this is the case, acetaldehyde, which is found in PET, has very probably got into the water.

– Nevertheless, the current state of research says that drinking from plastic bottles is not associated with any health risks. This is because the concentration of substances that may get into the water are too low to have any health consequences.
