If you want to use your Android smartphone’s connection for more than just charging the device, it must support USB OTG. Then you can also transfer data such as images or PDF files.
Android smartphones: What is USB OTG?
USB OTG is a USB standard that is built into most current Android smartphones and other devices.
- USB OTG is short for “USB On-The-Go,” meaning “USB for on the go.” It refers to the ability to connect other devices to your smartphone anywhere and anytime to transfer data.
- Both devices must support USB OTG. You can tell if they do by looking for the USB symbol with the letters “OTG” on the packaging or in the instructions. If you no longer have these to hand, there are apps available in the Google Play Store, such as “USB OTG Checker,” which will check your smartphone for this functionality.
- This function is often used to store data from a smartphone on a USB stick or hard drive. In most cases, you will need an adapter, as storage media usually have a USB-A port and smartphones have a USB-C or micro USB port.
- USB OTG has been supported by the system since Android 3.1, and most current devices running Android 4.0 or higher are compatible.
- To find out whether your device is compatible, you can perform a compatibility check using apps such as “USB OTG Checker” or “Easy OTG Checker.” You can also check the OTG capability in the device specifications.
- By the way: The integrated host function allows Android devices to control not only storage media but also peripheral devices such as mice, keyboards, or controllers. USB host mode may also be required with HID support for certain applications such as gaming controllers, but this usually works automatically.
How to connect your Android smartphone to a USB stick via USB OTG

- Connect the USB stick either directly or via an adapter to your smartphone.
- A field with a USB symbol will appear in the notification bar. Depending on your device, tap “View” or “Open” to read the storage medium.
- Now you can either copy files from the USB stick to your smartphone or vice versa.
- Tap the three dots in the file explorer of the stick and then tap “Disconnect” to eject the medium. You can now remove it again.
