Android: Turn off pop-ups – how to block ads

by Pramith

There is also a setting on Android smartphones that allows you to turn off pop-ups. We provide step-by-step instructions.

How to turn off pop-ups on Android

If you want to block annoying pop-up ads in the Chrome browser on your Android smartphone, you can do so with a simple setting.

  • Launch the Chrome app on your Android smartphone.

  • Then tap on the three vertically arranged dots in the top right corner and select “Settings.”

  • Scroll down to “Website settings.”

  • Under “Pop-ups and redirects,” you can now disable advertising.

  • To do this, set the slider so that pop-ups and redirects are no longer allowed and the text “Block pop-ups and redirects for websites (recommended)” appears.

Allow pop-ups from selected sites

If you do not want to block all pop-ups, you can allow them on some websites.

  • Open the Chrome app on your Android device and go to the page where pop-ups have been blocked.

  • At the bottom, you will find the “Always show” button. Tap this button to allow pop-ups on this page in the future.

Pop-ups disabled, but ads still appearing on Android smartphone

If websites are still overlaid with ads, an installed app may be causing the problem.

  • If the pop-ups have only appeared recently, uninstall the last app you added to your smartphone. Also check your phone for suspicious apps that you did not install.

  • Clear your browser cache and check the notification settings for websites on your phone.

  • You can also scan your smartphone with an antivirus program. We recommend scanners from AVG and Avira.
