Can you freeze cooked pasta? With these tips it works

by Michaela

Cooked pasta can be frozen without any problems. In this state, the pasta will keep for a long time and can be defrosted as needed and enjoyed together with a delicious sauce. It is important that the pasta is dry and cooled before freezing.

Freeze cooked pasta: Preserving pasta in the freezer

Freezing pasta is a great option when you have pasta left over after a meal. Cooked pasta only keeps for one to two days in the fridge, so freezing is great for a longer-term stash.

  • Before you freeze the pasta, it should be completely dry and cooled down. Make sure that no water remains in the pot when you drain it. It is best to put the pasta in a sieve so that the pasta water can drain off. Otherwise, the noodles may become soggy when defrosted.
  • Toss the noodles in a little oil first before freezing. This will prevent the freezing process from creating a firm and thick clump of pasta.
  • For freezing, put the pasta either in a sealable plastic box or in a freezer bag. For the sake of the environment, however, you should avoid the latter if possible.
  • A clean cotton bag can be used as an alternative. This has the advantage that the pasta in the bag can be flattened before freezing. This makes it easier to portion the pasta when needed by breaking off the desired amount.
  • Tip: Always freeze the pasta and sauce separately. This will prevent the noodles from becoming soggy after defrosting.
