Who owns Porsche? All info

by Tobias

Who owns Porsche is a frequently asked question. The car manufacturer is often associated with the names Ferdinand Porsche and Ferdinand Piëch in connection with VW. In fact, however, Porsche is no longer family-owned.

Who owns Porsche: a large, German automotive group

The Porsche company was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche in Stuttgart as a design office. After the Second World War, Porsche became an automobile factory that concentrated on the production of sports cars.

  • Porsche has a long history with VW. Among other things, the first Porsche 356 sports cars were built in 1948 with numerous VW components.
  • Ferdinand Piëch, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, was head of the then racing department and chairman of the board at Volkswagen from 1993 to 2002. From 2005 onwards, Porsche steadily increased its shareholding in VW.
  • In November 2007, the former Porsche AG was merged into Porsche Automobil Holding SE (Porsche SE for short). Porsche Vermögensverwaltungs AG in turn became Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG (Porsche AG for short), which continues car production.
  • Since 2009, Porsche AG has been part of the Volkswagen Group, which also includes other brands such as Audi, Skoda and Seat. Porsche SE sought to take over the VW Group in 2007 and 2008. However, due to financing problems, it was announced in 2009 that Volkswagen would secure a 49.9 per cent stake in Porsche AG from Porsche SE. In August 2012, VW then took over the subsidiary Porsche AG completely.
  • Porsche is thus a brand of the VW Group. Wolfgang Porsche, another grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG and Porsche Automobil Holding SE since 2007, among other positions.
