Wiretapping with AirPods: Using the “live listening” function as a bug

If you want to listen in on someone with your AirPods, such a function is available. However, this is not what this feature is for. In this article, we explain everything you need to know about this.

Eavesdropping with AirPods: A criminal offence

The new iOS update has made it possible to use the Live Listening feature with AirPods. However, this is not intended for listening to people.

• If you use your AirPods with the Live Listening feature to eavesdrop on someone, you are committing a criminal offence.

• Only a judge may order the interception and recording of non-public statements. As a private individual, you have no authority to do so.

• The AirPods Live Listen feature is not designed to eavesdrop on anyone. The feature is intended to allow you to follow a lecture or concert in a noisy environment, not to secretly eavesdrop on someone.

• You can also use this feature to connect it to a wired microphone to better understand what is being said. Adjust the volume using the buttons on the unit.

To set up the live listening function

If you’re in a noisy room and want to hear what’s being said, you’ll need to activate the Live Listen feature and pair your AirPods with the device.

• Add the live listening feature by going to the Control Centre in Settings.
• Activate the button next to the Listen function. Go back to exit the settings. The AirPods should be connected to your device.
• If you want to use the Live Listen feature, go to the Control Centre by swiping up or down across the screen. Tap the button with the ear.
• Make sure your device is close to the person speaking. To understand what is being said even better, you can connect a microphone to your iPhone or iPhone by cable.
