Home contents insurance in the tax return: Here you enter it

by Michaela

Home contents insurance is not easily deductible in the tax return, but in many cases it is quite easily possible. In this practical tip, we will show you when and how it works.

Tax return: Can you deduct household insurance at all?

You can usually only deduct policies on your income tax return if they are for direct provision for the future. Unfortunately, this is not the case with household insurance. However, there are exceptions.
  • Home contents insurance must be used professionally. If you take out household insurance for office premises, it will be charged as a business expense.
Employees and self-employed persons can also deduct household insurance in other ways. To do this, you must use your private study for professional purposes.

Tax return: Where to enter the household insurance?

    • Home contents insurance is deducted proportionately to the size of the study. For a house of 100 square metres with a study of 20 square metres, you may accordingly deduct 20 per cent of the household contents insurance.
    • The amount is entered under “Special expenses for income-related expenses”. For salaried employees, this can be found in Annex N. As proof, you should always enclose a copy of the insurance contract.
